Date nights and entertaining the kids can be expensive. Try some of these ideas without the big expense attached, while still keping everyone in the family entertained.

• Light up the barbecue grill and invite friends over or host a potluck dinner instead of going out to a restaurant. Enjoy your backyard firepit roasting marshmallows and hotdogs. Skip the movie theater and rent a film or have a game night at home with fun snacks.

• Check community calendars or do a simple Internet search to find free activities. You might find that there are festivals, public performance, concerts and classes nearby.

• Your local public library might have changed since you were a child, but it’s still free to browse around and check out materils. Aside from books, you can borrow CDs and DVDs. Another inexpensive treat you might find at the library, depending on the branch, are free classes and tutoring help for children and adults.

• When shopping for sporting equipment, consider looking into your local thrift store. Also, check with online marketplaces like Craigslist or Nextdoor, or check out your favorite local Facebook groups. You can also earn some money selling the sporting equipment you no longer need.

Apply These Savings to Your Activities: Cancel unused memberships such as magazine subscriptions, gym memberships, video clubs, and online forums. Review your cellphone bill with recent plan changes and insurance increases savings is possible.
